Italy in the late IIth century. Two young men - Peter and Andrew - watch the local Baron return with his men from the Holy Land, where they fought to "free" Jerusalem from the infidels. Peter, the illegitimate son of a Christian woman and an Arab man, and Andrew, a shepherd, are inspired by the Baron's call for a new Crusade. Richard, the Baron's son and a profoundly religious young man, also wishes to free the Holy Land, although his father would like him to stay and become his successor.
The three young men set off on an adventure that will both strengthen their bonds - and nearly destroy them. Appalled by the brutality of many of their fellow Crusaders and impressed by the wisdom and sophistication of the alleged "infidels", the friends begin to question their mission. Their friendship is further put to the test when Peter and Andrew fall in love with the same woman. But the final challenge comes in Jerusalem, where the friends are forced to fight against one another to defend what they believe in.
