When Robert Cannon, the rich and powerful President of Boston-based Thornhill Software, learns about the fatal boating accident of his younger brother, Kevin – the creative genius behind the company's innovative software design – he returns to their boyhood home on Nova Scotia's South Shore to retrieve the body. Robert leaves his indispensable secretary Mrs. Beecham to take care of business, but he is emotionally unprepared for what he finds in the seaside community steeped in a story of pirates and buried treasure. The young and beautiful Evie Shaw, owner of the marina from which Kevin rented a boat the day he died, is convinced that Kevin's death was not an accident. Robert quickly becomes obsessed with the truth about his brother's death, and with the attractive and capable young widow, Evie. Meanwhile, a competing software company has released a product remarkably similar to the one Kevin was trying to perfect just before his sudden death. And it seems that Orrin Mercer, the head of production at Thornhill's Nova Scotia-based plant, is not the trusted colleague that Robert believes him to be.
